GLOWS is a coalition of agencies, churches, organizations and individuals working to provide safe shelter to our homeless friends during inclement weather.  We currently open the shelter when the forecast is 32 degrees or less with a 20% chance of precipitation, or 28 degrees or less with no precipitation.  We watch the National Weather Forecast, which is often different from the local forecast.

We provide cots, blankets, hot meals, snacks and friendly faces.  We also provide kennels and food for the dogs and cats which may come to the shelter with our friends.

We rely 100% on volunteers to make this happen.  There are no paid personnel in our organization.

Please click on the volunteer button and sign up to be a GLOWS volunteer!

Thank you for participating in this valuable program to help the homeless during a very dangerous time!  Your help may very well save someone's life!

The shelter, which is currently the gym at Axe Methodist Church, 1700 W. Kingsley Rd., Garland 75041 in Garland, will be open during inclement weather.  By signing up here, you will be notified by email when the shelter is going to be open and be provided an opportunity to sign up for a time that best fits your schedule.

Training will be provided periodically so you will be comfortable with your duties when called.

We accept donations of blankets, coats, gloves, hats, new socks and new underwear.  They can be dropped off at Axe Memorial United Methodist Church, 1700 W. Kingsley Rd., Garland on Mondays through Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Please do not drop off anything other than those items listed above.  Please click HERE for information on where to take other donations.

All monetary donations are used for supplies and any repairs to the facility which may be necessary for damage occurring during an event.  Monetary donations can be mailed to GLOWS, c/o Axe Memorial Methodist Church, 1700 W. Kingsley Rd., Garland 75041.

If you have any questions about GLOWS or about volunteering, email Kim Thiehoff at or call 972-495-6476 and leave your name and number.  Your call will be returned that evening.
